Diet

Chinese box turtle exhibits a predominantly carnivorous diet, favoring various invertebrates like worms and insects. Occasionally, it broadens this diet, incorporating both fruits and plant matter, demonstrating opportunistic omnivory.

Appearance

Chinese box turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a domed carapace. Its shell is primarily dark brown or black, with a unique yellow marginal line, hence its name. The plastron is yellow with black blotches. Both males and females possess a stout, muscular tail. Mature males have a distinctly concave plastron, unlike females. A striking feature is the raised, keel-like structure running along the middle of each scute on the carapace.

Behavior

Chinese box turtle is a primarily terrestrial and nocturnal species known for its distinct mating behavior where males pursue and circle females. It retreats into its carapace when threatened and remains largely solitary. Its diet primarily consists of assorted fruits, vegetables, and, occasionally, meat. Chinese box turtle hibernates during the winter, retreating into loose soil or under decaying vegetation.
