Diet
Mallee dragon primarily consumes plant material, making it herbivorous. It relishes specific types of desert vegetation and selects soft plant tissues, prioritizing nutrient-rich portions such as blossoms, leaves, and shoots.
Appearance
Mallee dragon is a small, agile, ground-dwelling lizard with a slender body covered in rough, grainy scales. It is primarily sand-colored, allowing it to blend in with its arid surroundings, though males develop brighter, contrasting hues during the breeding season. This species also sports a series of darker vertical stripes running down its back. Its elongated snout, long tapered tail and prominent hind limbs are defining characteristics.
Behavior
Mallee dragon displays uniquely versatile behaviors to adapt to its arid habitat. Primarily solitary, this species becomes territorial during mating, adopting postures and color changes to ward off rivals. Distinguished by sun-avoidance in peak hours, it emerges during milder temperatures to forage, using acute visual sensitivity to catch prey.
