Diet

Northern pacific rattlesnake, a carnivorous species, primarily feeds on small mammals. These serpents are ambush predators, employing a sit-and-wait hunting strategy to feed on rodents, birds, and occasionally squamate reptiles.

Appearance

The northern pacific rattlesnake is a robust, medium to large-sized venomous snake with rough, keeled scales. Its coloration varies from yellowish-brown to black, commonly mottled with darker diamond-shaped patterns. The snake can be identified by the distinctive rattles at the end of its tail. There's little variation in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies, although colors may appear paler in older specimens.

Behavior

Northern pacific rattlesnake is primarily nocturnal, hunting small mammals and birds using an ambush tactic. Its venomous bite serves as a defensive and foraging tool. Being a solitary species, males exhibit fierce territorial behavior, particularly during the breeding season. Northern pacific rattlesnake does not migrate or hibernate, but instead retreats to cooler areas during hot months, adapting its behavior to its desert and mountainous habitats.
