Description
Crotalus mitchellii is a venomous pit viper species found in the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It was named in honor of Silas Weir Mitchell (1829â1914), a medical doctor who also studied rattlesnake venoms. Five subspecies are currently recognized, including the nominate subspecies described here.

Appearance
Speckled rattlesnake is a medium-sized snake with a broad, triangular head. It has rough, scaly skin, which is typically a mottled combination of pinkish-brown or purplish-gray, providing excellent camouflage in its desert habitat. This species is marked by dark, squarish blotches that run the length of its body and a dark tail, tipped with a rattle.
Behavior
Speckled rattlesnake is a primarily nocturnal and solitary creature, known for its distinctive station-and-wait predatory strategy. With a strong homing instinct, it efficiently defends its immediate vicinity from conspecifics. This species meticulously utilizes its natural desert habitat for thermoregulation, burrowing under rocks or foliage during harsh weather conditions.
