The timber rattlesnake, canebrake rattlesnake or banded rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus), is a species of venomous pit viper endemic to the eastern United States. Diet
Timber rattlesnake primarily feeds on small mammals, particularly rodents, but also includes birds and amphibians in its diet. Exceptionally patient hunters, they wait for prey to pass before striking with remarkable speed and precision.
Appearance
Timber rattlesnake is a large venomous snake, ranging from 91 to 152 cm in length, and has a robust body covered in keeled scales. The snake displays a color pattern of dark-brown, dark-grey, or black crossbands on a yellowish-brown or greyish background. It features a rattle at the end of its tail. Distinctively, a dark line runs from its eyes to its jaws. No significant difference in appearance due to age or gender is observed.
Behavior
Timber rattlesnake predominantly exhibits solitary and nocturnal behavior. Known for its defensive rattling noise prior to striking, it uses its iconic rattle most frequently during the breeding season and when threatened. Timber rattlesnake's diet consists mainly of small mammals which it detects through heat-sensing mechanisms located in its facial pits.
