Description

The western diamondback rattlesnake or Texas diamond-back (Crotalus atrox) is a venomous rattlesnake species found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is likely responsible for the majority of snakebite fatalities in northern Mexico and the greatest number of snakebites in the U.S. No subspecies is currently recognized.

Diet

Western diamondback rattlesnake is a carnivorous predator, predominantly consuming small mammals. It actively hunts ground-dwelling rodents and rabbits, also supplementing its diet with birds, lizards, and occasionally amphibians.

Appearance

Western diamondback rattlesnake is a large, heavy-bodied snake with rough, scaly skin. The main body color is pale, dusty brown, patterned with darker brown diamonds that are outlined in a creamy yellow. Western diamondback rattlesnake possesses a triangular head, a signature rattle on its tail, and large venomous fangs. There are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Western diamondback rattlesnake, primarily nocturnal, embody solitary and defensive behaviors. Its ledger includes a buzzing warning signal when perceived under threat. These animals employ heat-sensitive facial pits to identify and track warm-blooded prey. Interestingly, females repel offsprings soon after birth, emphasizing its inherent solitary nature.
