Diet
Eastern diamondback rattlesnake is a carnivorous species, primarily consuming small mammals. It captures prey with its venomous bite, ingesting them whole after incapacitation. The diet is rich in rodents, occasionally supplemented with birds and amphibians.
Appearance
Eastern diamondback rattlesnake is a large, heavy-bodied snake with keeled scales. It boasts a striking pattern of dark, diamond-shaped markings on its yellowish or tan skin. Notably, it bears a rattling tail segment, a signature feature used as a warning signal. The male snake tends to be slightly larger than the female, and juveniles' coloration is usually brighter than adults.
Behavior
Eastern diamondback rattlesnake exhibits solitary and nocturnal behavior, hunting and foraging primarily at night. It is most known for its defensive behavior of producing a loud, intimidating rattle when threatened. Instead of building nests, females give live birth in covered locations. Eastern diamondback rattlesnake is non-migratory and exhibits strong territoriality, often returning to the same location after disturbances.
