Description

The mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris = "crocodile of the marsh"), also called the Indian, Indus, Persian, Sindhu, marsh crocodile or simply mugger, is found throughout the Indian subcontinent and the surrounding countries, like Pakistan where the Indus crocodile is the national reptile of Pakistan. It is one of the three crocodilians found in India, the others being the gharial and the saltwater crocodile. It is a medium-sized crocodil

Mugger crocodile is primarily a carnivorous species, with fish being the most integral part of its diet. It also partakes in opportunistic feeding, consuming invertebrates, reptiles, and mammals.

Appearance

Mugger crocodile is a large semi-aquatic reptile with a rugged, dark green or muddy brown body. It has a long, narrow snout filled with sharp teeth and a heavy-set body covered in tough, bony plates known as scutes. This animal possesses webbed hind feet and a powerful tail, which facilitates efficient movement in water. Please note that there are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Mugger crocodile typically exhibits nocturnal, solitary behavior, primarily hunting for fish, mollusks, and other small vertebrates in freshwater habitats. Exceptionally territorial, they use visual signals and physical aggression to maintain their dominion. During the breeding season, mugger crocodile construct large mound nests on the riverbank exhibiting uncharacteristic social interaction.
