Description
Native to southern Mexico and Central America, the yellowbelly snake explores lower to moderate altitude forests, digging through leaf litter and sometimes climbing trees to feed on other reptiles, amphibians, caterpillars and earthworms. Named for its yellow ventral scales, this snake is also called Eduardo's forest snake in honor of Eduardo Mata-Silva, who collected the specimen on which the species standard is based.

Yellowbelly snake primarily feeds on small invertebrates, predominantly comprising of earthworms and slugs. Exceptionally, the diet extends to small reptiles and amphibians, exhibiting carnivorous behavior.
Appearance
Yellowbelly snake is a small snake with a slender body. Covered in smooth scales, this species boasts a striking pattern of broad, black bands against a light yellow or cream base color. The tail tapers sharply and is relatively long. The head is small, barely distinguishable from the neck. Gender and age do not significantly affect the appearance.
Behavior
Yellowbelly snake is a nocturnal predator, hunting primarily at night by ambush. Its solitary nature shows limited social interactions, unless during the breeding season. Adapted to forest and grassland habitats, yellowbelly snake employs cryptic coloring for camouflage against predators. Rarely, it exhibits defensiveness when disturbed, releasing a foul-smelling musk.
