Description
The painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) is the most widespread native turtle of North America. It lives in slow-moving fresh waters, from southern Canada to Louisiana and northern Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The turtle is the only species of the genus Chrysemys, which is part of the pond turtle family Emydidae. Fossils show that the painted turtle existed 15Â million years ago. Four regionally based subspecies (the eastern, midland, southern, and western) evolve

Painted turtle sustains mostly on a herbivorous diet, preferentially consuming leafy aquatic vegetation. They may also show infrequent omnivorous tendencies, supplementing their diet with aquatic invertebrates and carrion.
Appearance
Painted turtle is a medium-sized turtle with a smooth, flat shell. Its carapace, or upper shell, is olive or dark green with red, yellow, or orange irregular markings, giving it a painted appearance. The plastron, or underside, is usually yellow with some dark markings. No significant gender-based differences are noted in color or size, but the females are typically slightly larger. An aquatic species, painted turtle has webbed feet, suited for swimming.
Behavior
Painted turtle is known for its basking behavior, often observed sunning on logs or rocks to regulate body temperature. Predominantly solitary outside the breeding season, this species practices seasonal migration for nesting. They are omnivorous, with foraging behavior altering according to their developmental stage and the availability of food in their freshwater habitats.
