Description
Chironius scurrulus, commonly known as the smooth machete savane, is a large slender colubrid snake. It is also known as Wagler's sipo.
General Info
Lifespan
5-10 years
Diet
Wagler's sipo is predominantly an ophiophagus species, feeding primarily on serpents. It exhibits a distinct preference for elongated reptiles, especially members of the Colubridae family. An adept climber, wagler's sipo frequently hunts arboreal snakes, signifying its ecological niche as a canopy-level predator.
Appearance
Wagler's sipo is a medium sized, slender and elongated snake, lacking the bulkiness seen in many other snake species. Its scales, which are smooth, glossy and reflective, display a coloration that predominantly consists of various shades of browns and blacks. The eye-catching feature of this species is its bright yellow color underside. No significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies have been noted.
Behavior
Wagler's sipo is a daytime-active, semi-arboreal species known for its sleek locomotion. It primarily feeds on small vertebrates, using rapid strikes to subdue prey. Primarily solitary, interactions often lead to aggressive posturing and territorial disputes. Wagler's sipo exhibits a 'sham death' defensive strategy when threatened, releasing body fluids to deter predators.
