Description
The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is a large freshwater turtle of the family Chelydridae. Its natural range extends from southeastern Canada, southwest to the edge of the Rocky Mountains, as far east as Nova Scotia and Florida. This species and the larger alligator snapping turtles are the only Macrochelys species in this family found in North America (though the common snapping turtle, as its name implies, is much more widespread).

Diet
Common snapping turtle's omnivorous diet primarily consists of aquatic invertebrates, fish, and amphibians. Preferences vary seasonally, with mollusks, insects, and worms consumed more frequently during warmer months. Small mammals and birds serve as infrequent, opportunistic meals.
Appearance
Common snapping turtle is a large aquatic turtle with a heavy head, powerful jaws, and a rugged, domed shell. Its skin is rough and leathery, exhibiting a generally gray to brownish-black coloration. The tail is unusually long, nearly the same length as the shell, and has saw-like ridges. There are no significant appearance differences due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Common snapping turtle is known for being solitary and aggressive. This nocturnal aquatic creature spends its days hidden in mud or sand, surfacing for air as needed. A sit-and-wait predator, it ambushes prey rather than actively hunting. It has territorial tendencies, especially males during breeding season. Survival in variable climates is facilitated by hibernating in winter and aestivation during dry periods.
