The Chaco tortoise (Chelonoidis chilensis), also known as the Argentine tortoise or southern wood tortoise, is a tortoise from the family Testudinidae.

Appearance
Southern wood tortoise is a medium-sized tortoise with a dark, domed shell distinctive for its rough, pointed scutes. It has sturdy legs and a small head. Its skin is rough and leathery, with a consistent grey-brown coloration across its entire body. This species lacks any significant phenotypic differences based on age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Southern wood tortoise is known for a mostly solitary existence with seasonal movements related to resource availability. They are herbivorous, foraging primarily on grasses and cacti. This species is not territorial, however, male-to-male interactions occur during mating season. Southern wood tortoise have adapted to thrive in arid environments.
