General Info
Lifespan
5-10 years
Diet
The primary sustenance for snouted night adder consists of small mammals and birds. It employs an ambush and silently-attack strategy, aiding its specific preference for rodents and fledglings.
Appearance
Snouted night adder is a small snake, reaching lengths of 20-40cm. It has a robust, slightly flattened body with a prominently triangular head. Its skin is smooth and glossy. Its primary coloration is a pale, dusty green, interrupted by a pattern of brown-black bands that circle its body. Its belly is a paler cream color. It also features hollow fangs at the front of its mouth, a characteristic of all viper species.
Behavior
Snouted night adder is a nocturnal, solitary viper, mostly active during rainfall. Notable for its head-bobbing mimicry behavior while stalking prey, it uses its narrow, pointed snout to probe into burrows. Strikingly, snouted night adder uses passive hunting tactics, lying motionless awaiting prey, and avoids confrontation for territorial disputes.
