Description

The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), or loggerhead, is an oceanic turtle distributed throughout the world. It is a marine reptile, belonging to the family Cheloniidae. The average loggerhead measures around 90Â cm (35Â in) long when fully grown, although larger specimens of up to 280Â cm (110Â in) have been discovered. The adult loggerhead sea turtle weighs approximately 135Â kg (298Â lb), with the largest specimens weighing in at more than 450Â kg (1,000Â lb). The skin range

Diet

Loggerhead sea turtle has an omnivorous diet majorly constituted of jellyfish, its primary food. Specific dietary preferences include sea sponges, crustaceans, mollusks, and occasionally, marine algae and fish.

Appearance

Loggerhead sea turtle is a large, stocky marine turtle with a hard, bumpy carapace. The shell is primarily reddish-brown with a pale yellowish undershell. It lacks fur, instead displaying rough, scaly skin. Loggerhead sea turtle has a large head and powerful jaw, flanked by strong, paddle-like flippers, used for swimming. Both males and females are alike with no visible differences in appearance, except that adult males have longer tails.

Behavior

Loggerhead sea turtle displays determined migratory patterns, travelling long distances for nesting -- a unique trait among reptiles. These solitary animals display strong philopatry, returning to their birthplaces to lay eggs. Unlike most sea turtles, loggerhead sea turtle shows explicit territorial behavior, aggressively warding off intruders from their feeding territories.
