General Info
Lifespan
20-30 years
Diet
Calabar ground python is known for its strict carnivorous feeding behavior, primarily consuming soft-bodied prey, such as earthworms and slugs. Due to its reduced dentition, calabar ground python specializes in feeding on invertebrates without the need to inflict a lethal initial bite.
Appearance
Calabar ground python is a stout, cylindrical-bodied snake with robust, strong musculature and smooth, glossy skin. It sports a uniformly dark brown or blackish coloration lacking distinctive markings. This species is relatively small with adults rarely exceeding one meter in length. Phenotypic differences based on age or gender are not readily noticeable. With their blunt heads and short tails, they closely resemble earthworms, a unique adaptation aiding their burrowing lifestyle.
Behavior
Calabar ground python demonstrates unique survival skills as a nocturnal, fossorial snake, burrowing to escape predators and extreme weather. Its feeding behavior is distinctive, employing constriction to subdue prey, primarily rodents. Typically solitary, it exhibits sexual dimorphism, with females growing larger than males. This species does not display territorial marking or defense.
