Description
The yacare caiman (Caiman yacare, jacaré in Portuguese) is a species of caiman found in central South America, including northeastern Argentina, Uruguay, southeastern Peru, eastern Bolivia, central/southwest Brazil, and the rivers of Paraguay. About 10 million individual yacare caimans exist within the Brazilian pantanal, representing what is quite possibly the largest single crocodilian population on Earth.

Diet
Yacare caiman is an opportunistic carnivore. It primarily consumes aquatic organisms such as snails, crustaceans, and fish, but supplements its diet with small mammals and birds when available.
Appearance
The Yacare Caiman, or yacare caiman, is a medium- to large-sized crocodilian with a robust body covered in hard, bony plates. It exhibits an olive-brown coloration, tending towards black, with darker bands on the body and tail. Notable features include a broad snout with visibly protruding, sharp teeth. Its gender and age have no significant impact on its appearance.
Behavior
Yacare caiman exhibits nocturnal, solitary behavior, primarily hunting in water for fish and invertebrates. During the day it basks on riverbanks, utilizing the sun for thermoregulation. Despite its solitary nature, yacare caiman displays group dynamics during the dry season, sharing limited aquatic territories. Defensive territorial actions are displayed through hissing and jaw-snapping.
