Breviceps adspersus (common rain frog or bushveld rain frog) is a species of frog in the family Brevicipitidae. It is found in Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Common rain frog's dietary habits are majorly insectivorous, it feeds primarily on locusts and beetles. This nocturnal creature forages under the cover of darkness, hunting predominantly for invertebrates such as worms and other small insects.
Appearance
Common rain frog is a small, round-bodied frog with a smooth, dark brown to black skin, often mottled with lighter patches. Its most distinctive feature is its wide, flat head and extremely short snout. While most noticeable characteristics are shared by all individuals, young ones tend to exhibit brighter coloration. This amphibian lacks a tail, consistent with its frog classification. It is also characterized by its exceptionally short, stubby limbs and large, bulbous eyes.
Behavior
Common rain frog are largely solitary, coming together only for mating. Known for their unique defensive behavior, they puff up their body to deter predators. Nighttime burrowers, their diet consists of small invertebrates. Despite their short legs, they are adept climbers, uniquely adapted to their woodland habitats.
