Diet
Brazil's lancehead is essentially an animalivorous species which primarily feeds on small mammals and birds. Their preference leans towards rodents, bats, and nestling birds, seeking their prey through active foraging or ambush tactics.
Appearance
Brazil's lancehead is a medium-sized viper with a slender body covered in keeled scales. The snake predominantly exhibits a yellow-brown coloration overlaid with broad, dark brown bands. It has a triangular head with a distinctive, upright heat-sensing pit between the eye and nostril. Its long, venomous fangs are its most notable feature. The tail tapers to a fine point. There are no noticeable differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Brazil's lancehead is a nocturnal, solitary species known for its secretive behavior. It is an expert ambush predator, lying in wait for prey before delivering a venomous strike. The species employs a sit-and-wait hunting strategy rather than actively pursuing its prey. It usually selects well-concealed resting places during the day and becomes more active at night.
