Appearance
European fire-bellied toad is a small amphibian with a round body and a flat underside. It has smooth, moist skin that varies between a vivid fire-belly red and dark brownish-black. Distinctly, it sports irregular black markings. This creature's most iconic feature is its bright red-to-yellow belly, contrasting its dark back. Discernible at a glance are the webbed hind feet, indicative of its aquatic habits. There is no significant difference in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
European fire-bellied toad is a semi-aquatic, largely nocturnal amphibian with a prominent unkenreflex defensive posture, exposing its brightly colored ventral side to dissuade predators. Its mating ritual involves vocal calls and tactile stimulation. With a solitary nature, each individual defends its territory aggressively.
