Description

The Mexican Climbing Salamander (Bolitoglossa mexicana) is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is found in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and possibly Nicaragua. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, plantations, and rural gardens. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Appearance

Mexican Mushroomtongue Salamander is a small-sized salamander with a slender body shape, covered in smooth, moist skin. Its torso is predominantly black, adorned with distinctive yellow to orange dashes or dots. This species has no wings or horns, but possesses a lengthy tail and protruding eyes. Additionally, its feet feature considerable webbing, supporting its predominantly arboreal lifestyle. There is no noticeable variation in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Mexican Mushroomtongue Salamander is a nocturnal, arboreal species known for its strong climbing abilities. This solitary organism relies primarily on its elongated tongue for foraging, adeptly catching insects in mid-air. It has a unique defensive display, coiling its tail when threatened. It doesn't exhibit territorial behaviors, facilitating broad distribution within its habitat.
