Description

Peter's Climbing Salamander, or Bolitoglossa adspersa is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to Colombia. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Peter's climbing salamander thrives on a diet primarily rich in small invertebrates, with a marked preference for termites and aquatic larvae. The species exhibits opportunistic feeding behavior, consuming prey available in its tropical habitat.

Appearance

Peter's climbing salamander is a slender, medium-sized salamander with smooth, moist skin. Typically its coloration ranges from light tan to dark brown, often spotted or mottled for excellent camouflage. Its most striking feature is its long, narrow tail and elongated limbs, adapted for a climbing lifestyle. There are no significant differences between males and females or sub-species in terms of appearance.

Behavior

Peter's climbing salamander displays nocturnal, arboreal lifestyle habits, spending its days hidden in leaf litter and moss. Its prehensile tail permits adept tree navigation while hunting insects at night. Generally solitary, it possesses territorial tendencies, defending its area with off-putting postures and vocalizations. Strikingly, peter's climbing salamander employs its coloration as camouflage for survival.
