Diet
Northern boa is a carnivorous species, feeding primarily on small mammals. Birds and lizards are also occasionally consumed, while rodents, particularly rats, constitute their dominant prey. Prey is swallowed whole after being constricted.
Appearance
Northern boa is a large, heavy-bodied snake with smooth, scaly skin. It boasts a main coloration of rich browns, interspersed with darker brown or black saddle-like markings along its length. Tail patterns tend to be more irregular and spectacular. While there is little physical difference between males and females, juveniles can be brighter with more contrasting colorations.
Behavior
Northern boa is a solitary and nocturnal species, using crepuscular activity peaks to enhance survival. This serpent exhibits sit-and-wait predator behavior, employing sensory cues to detect and capture prey. Distinctively, northern boa can control the constriction pressure applied during predation, adapting it to the size and species of prey. Its sedentary habits limit territorial disputes.
