Bitis atropos is a small, venomous viper species endemic to mountainous regions in southern Africa. No subspecies are currently recognized.

The dietary habits of berg adder chiefly revolve around small mammals, specifically rodents. Exceptionally, this species also feeds on certain birds and amphibians, predominantly utilising ambush predation techniques to procure its meal.
Appearance
Berg adder is a medium-sized viper with a stocky build and keeled scales. The snake showcases a mesmerizing pattern of zig-zag or rhombic shapes against a brown or olive background. The most noticeable features are their striking black eyes with vertical pupils. There are no significant appearance differences noted among age groups, genders, or subspecies.
Behavior
Berg adder is a solitary and nocturnal species, most active shortly after sunset. This venomous snake has an ambush hunting strategy, often spending long periods camouflaged in its habitat, waiting for prey. Its strike is rapid and precise. Defensive behavior includes hissing and a threat display, wherein it forms a coil, lifting its head and the middle part of its body off the ground.
