Description

Mountain new caledonian gecko is renown for its crepuscular lifestyle, maintaining peak activity during twilight hours. This arboreal species' distinct approach to survival includes its exceptional grasp on vertical surfaces and tree trunks, allowing it to easily navigate treetops. Living predominantly in humid forests of New Caledonia, its presence contributes to the ecological balance through insect regulation.

Diet

Mountain new caledonian gecko adopts a largely herbivorous diet, with a significant focus on consuming lichens and mosses. This species also occasionally indulges in insects, demonstrating an omnivorous tendency.

Appearance

Mountain new caledonian gecko is a small-sized gecko, flaunting a long, slender body with rough, granular skin. Predominantly brown, their coloration is adorned with a sequence of darker crossbands running along the body, offering a striking contrast. Noteworthy attributes include webbed feet, a prehensile tail, and vertically slit pupils. No significant differences in appearance exist due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Mountain new caledonian gecko is nocturnal, hiding under rocks and logs during the day, emerging to hunt and forage at night. It uses its strong, prehensile tail to climb trees, exhibiting an arboreal habit. This species is typically solitary, avoiding other members unless ready to breed. Mountain new caledonian gecko’s survival behavior includes a heightened ability to blend into its surrounding landscapes, providing camouflage against predators.
