Description
The plumed basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons), also called a green basilisk, double crested basilisk, or Jesus Christ lizard, is a species of corytophanid native to Central America.
General Info
Lifespan
7-9 years
Diet
Plumed basilisk mainly feeds on plants, specifically leaves, flowers, and fruit. This creature's diet also includes insects and small vertebrates, consuming them opportunistically when available.
Appearance
Plumed basilisk is a large lizard reaching lengths of up to 2.5 feet, exhibiting a narrow and elongated body shape. It bears a most notable crest made of elongated scales that proceeds from its head to the tail. The skin is mainly bright green with occasional yellow tones and is covered in small, granular scales. The crest and throat have an impressive red or orange color. There are no significant differences in color or shape between genders or due to age.
Behavior
Plumed basilisk is a solitary creature primarily active during the day. It uses specialized scales on its hind feet for locomotion, a unique behavior that allows it to 'walk' on water in short bursts, rendering it the nickname 'Jesus Christ lizard'. The males display territorial behaviors, often engaging in head-bobbing and push-ups to ward off rivals.
