The common basilisk (Basiliscus basiliscus) is a lizard found in Central and South American rainforests near rivers and streams. The basilisk is part of the corytophanid family. It is also known as the South American Jesus lizard, Jesus lizard, Jesus Christ lizard, or lagarto de Jesus Cristo for its ability to run on the surface of water.

The common basilisk is a large lizard measuring up to 75 cm long, with a robust body covered in scaly, raised skin. It is mainly green or brown, typically with lighter or darker spots. Its most distinctive feature is the large, draped crest on its head and along its back and tail. Adult males have larger and more prominent crests compared to females and juveniles. Its elongated tail contributes to over half its length and assists in swimming.
Behavior
Common basilisk are fast-moving arboreal lizards recognized for their unique water-sprinting ability. Primarily solitary, they defend their territory assertively, displaying elaborate crest-erections and body inflation.
