Diet
Fin whale is a filter-feeding species, primarily subsisting on abundant zooplankton. Its diet is vastly comprised of tiny shrimp-like animals called krill, supplemented at times with small schooling fish.
Appearance
Fin whale is a colossal marine mammal reaching lengths of up to 27 meters, the second largest animal on earth. It has a streamlined, torpedo-like body and smooth skin varying from grayish-blue to black, fading to white underneath. Its defining feature is the splayed bushy blow, emanating from two blowholes on top of its head. Males and females appear similar with no noticeable age-specific changes.
Behavior
Fin whale are solitary animals, commonly known for their migratory patterns, routinely travelling between feeding and breeding grounds. Notably unique is their 'lunge feeding', a strategy used to consume large amounts of krill and small fish. Despite their size, they are acrobatic, frequently displaying behaviors like breaching and tail-slapping. No specific territorial behavior is observed.
