Diet
Geoffroy's spider monkey primarily feeds on a herbivorous diet, favoring fruits, leaves, and flowers. Occasional consumption of insects and small vertebrates supplements its nutritional intake, underlining its adaptability amid varying food availability.
Appearance
Geoffroy's spider monkey is a medium-sized primate with a slender body covered in dense black fur. Its most characteristic feature is a long, prehensile tail almost twice its body length, used extensively for locomotion. Known for its agile body, it has elongated limbs and a lack of thumbs. They display no significant disparities in coloration or size due to age or gender.
Behavior
Geoffroy's spider monkey is a diurnal, highly social, and arboreal species. Their diet primarily consists of fruit but it varies seasonally to include leaves, flowers, or insects. Mutual grooming, a key social behavior, strengthens group bonds. Typically, they reside in flexible groups of 20–42 individuals without clear dominance hierarchies, marked territories or aggressive competition. Agile and fast, they utilize all four limbs for locomotion (brachiation).
