The Cape coral snake (Aspidelaps lubricus), also known as the Cape coral cobra is a species of venomous elapid snake found in parts of southern Africa. This snake is found in regions of the Karoo, former Cape Province, and all the way up into Namibia. It mostly inhabits very arid regions, like deserts and rocky/sandy ecosystems. Cape coral snake is a small to medium-sized snake with a slender body and smooth, glossy scales. It exhibits an attractive bicolored pattern: black bands interspersed with bright yellow to orange intervals. The snake's head is distinctly triangular and houses venom glands, connected to its notably short, fixed fangs. Across the genders and various life stages, there is no substantial difference in their appearance.
Behavior
Cape coral snake is a nocturnal, underground snake species, making it infrequently observed. Befitting their fosorial lifestyle, they exhibit ambush hunting techniques, waiting for prey to pass by their hiding spots. Known for their 'caudal luring', they wiggle their tail tip to mimic preys and attract predators. They are solitary, typically meeting only to mate. Unlike many snakes, cape coral snake is ovoviviparous, giving live birth to young.
