Description
Lightfoot's moss frog or the Cape Peninsula moss frog (Arthroleptella lightfooti) is a species of frog in the family Pyxicephalidae. It is endemic to South Africa. Its natural habitats are temperate forest, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, and rivers. It is threatened by habitat loss.
General Info
Lifespan
5-10 years
Diet
Lightfoot's moss frog primarily subsists on a diet made up of small arthropods. The species is particularly inclined to eat spiders and beetles, utilizing their acute sensibility to capture these nocturnal prey.
Appearance
Lightfoot's moss frog is a small to medium-sized frog with slender body shape and a velvet-like skin. Its coloration varies from coppery orange to red-brown with irregular dark blotches. The species lacks any distinct horns, wings, or tail. There are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Lightfoot's moss frog exhibits largely diurnal behavior, specializing in jumping rather than walking for locomotion. Famed for single-species choruses at dawn and dusk, it denotes a distinct community interaction. Confined to a restricted habitat, it adapts to high-altitude fynbos vegetation, utilizing the area for protective hideaways. Contrary to many other amphibians, this species does not depend on standing bodies of water for reproduction, laying eggs in moist terrestrial habitats instead.
