Description

The spiny softshell turtle (Apalone spinifera) is a species of softshell turtle, one of the largest freshwater turtle species in North America. Both the common name, spiny softshell, and the specific name, spinifera (spine-bearing), refer to the spiny, cone-like projections on the leading edge of the carapace, which are not scutes (scales).

Appearance

Spiny softshell turtle is a large freshwater turtle with a flat, streamlined shell, often leathery and adorned with spiny projections on the edges. Its skin and shell range in color from olive to dark brown, seamlessly blending into the underwater environment. The species displays sexual dimorphism, with females significantly larger than males. With elongated, snorkel-like nostrils and webbed feet, spiny softshell turtle truly epitomizes a life immersed in water.

Behavior

Spiny softshell turtle is predominantly solitary and remains submerged at the bottom of water bodies for extended periods, often with only its eyes and nostrils exposed. It displays aggressive territorial behavior, especially males during the mating season. They are active predators, primarily consuming fish and invertebrates. Spiny softshell turtle have a unique leathery shell adapted for a streamlined aquatic life.
