This species used to belong to the genus Norops for some time, but this has been reversed. The scientific type designation capito is Latin for "thick head" and refers to the strikingly short head. The English name is even "pug-nosed anole".

General Info

Lifespan
3-8 years
Diet
Bighead anole primarily feeds on insects, particularly tree-dwelling ones like beetles and spiders. Crickets form a significant part of its diet. It hunts with a 'sit-and-wait' strategy, which fits with its arboreal lifestyle.
Appearance
Bighead anole is a medium-sized lizard with a robust body structure. Its leathery skin showcases a beautiful blend of bright green and brown, adapting well to its habitat. Males have a distinctively large head, sometimes with a bluish tint, and a well-developed dewlap. Young ones tend to have a more vibrant hue, which dulls as they age.
Behavior
Bighead anole are sedentary creatures, often perching on tree branches, surveying their surroundings for insects, their main food source. Primarily solitary, they exhibit territorial behavior, aggressively chattering and inflating their body when threatened. Unique to bighead anole, they can significantly change body color, providing effective camouflage in their tropical forest habitats.
