The Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus) is a species of salamander in the family Cryptobranchidae. The species is endemic to Japan, where it is known as ÅsanshÅuo (ãªãªãµã³ã·ã§ã¦ã¦ãª/大山æ¤é), literally meaning "giant pepper fish". With a length of up to 5 feet (1.5 m), it is the third-largest salamander in the world, only being surpassed by the very similar and closely related Chinese giant salamander (A. davidianus) and South China giant salamander (A. sligoi).

   Diet
Japanese giant salamander primarily subsists on a diet of aquatic invertebrates, particularly crustaceans and insects. However, it frequently supplements this diet with small fish and amphibian species native to its habitat.
   Appearance
Japanese giant salamander is a gigantic salamander with a flattened body and broad head. It has rough, wrinkly skin, which is dark brown to grayish-black. The creature possesses tiny eyes and lateral line system spots along its body. It lacks visible sexual dimorphism and age-related changes in its appearance.
   Behavior
Japanese giant salamander is predominantly aquatic, nocturnal, and solitary by nature. This species is territorial, with males often aggressively defending personal space. Feeding primarily at night, it consumes a diet primarily of small fish and crustaceans. Known for its lengthy dormancy period, it enhances survival in colder months through dramatically reduced physical activity.
