   Diet
Chinese giant salamander is essentially a carnivorous species relying largely on freshwater crabs for nourishment. Its dietary practice extends to include smaller aquatic vertebrates, insects, and occasionally mollusks, signifying a highly opportunistic feeding behavior.
   Appearance
Chinese giant salamander is a large amphibian with a flat body, stout limbs and a wide head. Its rough, wrinkled skin ranges in color from dark brown to olive green. The blunt snout and scattered warts on its body provide a distinctive appearance. Genders look similar. Younger ones are often paler and smoother than adults. Its noticeable eyes are tiny relative to its size.
   Behavior
Chinese giant salamander is predominantly nocturnal, using the cover of darkness to forage and feed. A solitary species, it stakes territories using secretions from skin glands. Extraordinarily sedentary, it remains immobile for long durations, merging with its habitat as a form of camouflage. Its behavior is modified during breeding season, when it becomes more active.
