Description
The two-toed amphiuma (Amphiuma means) is a snake-like salamander found chiefly in the southeastern United States. It is commonly, but incorrectly, called "congo snake", "conger eel" or the "blind eel". One of the largest extant species of amphibians in the world, they can grow from 39 to 1,042Â g (1.4 to 36.8Â oz) in mass and from 34.8 to 116Â cm (13.7 to 45.7Â in) in length. They have four vestigial legs that end in two or three toes which...

Diet
Two-toed amphiuma predominantly feeds on a diet comprising aquatic animals. It possesses a distinct preference for small crayfish, but also consumes insects, small fish, and various amphibian species amicably. An opportunistic predator, two-toed amphiuma is proficient at exploiting diet diversity.
Appearance
Two-toed amphiuma features an elongated, eel-like body, stretching up to 116cm. Its unique skin is smooth, glossy and dark grey or brownish-black. Its four tiny limbs, nearly vestigial due to adaptation to its aquatic habitats, have finger-like projections. Notably, it has no external gills but possesses two slits on each side of its neck. There are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Two-toed amphiuma is a nocturnal, predominantly aquatic animal, adept at burrowing in the substrate. It's highly elusive, usually solitary, and displays territorial behavior to protect its monitored dispersion areas. Catching prey through short-range lunging, two-toed amphiuma's foraging cognitive tactics and sedentary lifestyle are designed around its low-energy cost, seasonal switch between terrestrial and aquatic, and confined microhabitats.
