Description

The jacky dragon (Amphibolurus muricatus) is a type of lizard native to southeastern Australia. It was one of the first Australian reptiles to be named, originally described by English zoologist George Shaw in Surgeon-General John White’s Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales, which was published in London in 1790. It is well known for its bright yellow mouth and well-developed vertebral crest, as well as the temperature-dependent sex determination of its offspring. Other co

Diet

Jacky dragon exhibits omnivorous feeding behaviors, primarily consuming invertebrates, like insects and spiders. Additionally, it supplements its diet with flora, particularly succulent plants, for hydration and nutrition.

Appearance

Jacky dragon is a medium-sized lizard with a tough, scale-covered body. Its skin color changes with temperature and surroundings, but typically involves green, brown, or gray shades with distinctive blotchy patterns. Mature males develop a spiky crest along their torso and tail, and their throats blacken during breeding periods. Females and young are less brightly colored and lack the pronounced crested spine.

Behavior

Predominantly solitary, jacky dragon exhibits notable basking behavior, using heat for thermoregulation. The species is territorial, with males engaging in head-bobbing displays to assert dominance. Jacky dragon hunts both arthropods and smaller reptiles, using its spiky, camouflage skin for effective predation and defense in its arid habitat.
