Description
The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is native to one single lake near Mexico City. Urbanization and the degradation of their territory have nearly driven the species to extinction, but they are becoming popular pets in captivity. A delightful-looking type of salamander, axolotls are perhaps best known for their remarkable ability to regrow lost limbs or other body parts.

Axolotl predominantly sustains itself on a carnivorous diet, consuming small aquatic organisms. It specifically favours brine shrimp, daphnia, and tubifex worms, demonstrating a preference for soft-bodied fauna.
AdultSize
6-18 inches
Appearance
Axolotl is a medium-sized aquatic salamander, known for its lack of metamorphosis. It possesses a long, cylindrical body and a broad head, with feathery external gills behind its eyes. Covered with a smooth, slimy skin, it is mainly black or dark blue, but a rare, leucistic variant is known for its striking pasty white hue with pinkish tones. Both genders look alike, and there is no significant variation with age.
Behavior
Axolotl, or 'Mexican walking fish', are solitary, completely aquatic creatures displaying limited aggressiveness. Their predominant behaviors include foraging for small invertebrates and surface floating during rest. Notably, these amphibians are neotenic, retaining aquatic juvenile features throughout life. They use chemical signals for communication and territory establishment in their freshwater habitats.
