Description

Barred tiger salamander (Ambystoma mavortium) is a terrestrial amphibian - a salamander native to western North America. A nocturnal predator, it feeds on any prey that it can overpower. The larvae are aquatic and are often sold as a fishing bait under the names 'mud puppies' or 'water dogs'. Barred tiger salamander is also commonly kept a pet, although it should not be wild-caught.

Diet

The diet of barred tiger salamander primarily consists of a wide variety of invertebrates. Notably, it feeds on insects, spiders, and earthworms, employing stealth coupled with a swift, lunge-and-gulp hunting strategy to secure its prey.

Appearance

Barred tiger salamander is a large salamander, with a body length ranging from 17 to 33 cm. They have a solid, muscular body shape, and smooth, moist skin. Their coloration varies between dark grey to black with distinctive yellow or gold blotches distributed across their bodies, making each individual unique. Their short, stumpy tails are vertically flattened. There are no significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.

Behavior

Barred tiger salamander is distinctive for its ambulatory form of locomotion, despite being a species of mole salamander. With their largely nocturnal tendencies, individuals surface from burrows after rains for foraging, with diet mainly consisting of invertebrates. Solitary by nature, barred tiger salamander meet only for breeding, exhibiting strong male competition for mates.
