Description
Mabee's salamander (Ambystoma mabeei) is a mole salamander found in tupelo and cypress bottoms in pinewoods, open fields, and lowland deciduous forests, pine savannahs, low wet woods, and swamps. It usually burrows near breeding ponds. Eggs are attached to submerged plant material or bottom debris of acidic, fishless ponds in or near pine stands. In Virginia, it breeds in fish-free vernal pond in a large clear-cut area and in ephemeral sinkhole ponds up to 1.5 m...

Diet
Mabee's salamander demonstrates a carnivorous diet, primarily consuming small invertebrates. Their sustenance largely relies on a variety of insects, worms, and small mollusks, indicating adaptability towards different food sources within their natural habitat.
Appearance
Mabee's salamander are medium-sized, robust salamanders with smooth, moist skin. They predominantly have a dusky, dark brown coloration with lighter shades around the belly. Younger individuals typically feature blue-black spots on their back and sides. They have a broad head, large, lidless eyes, and a long, laterally compressed tail, structured for aquatic locomotion. No significant differences in appearance due to age, gender, or subspecies.
Behavior
Mabee's salamander displays secretive behavior, typically only observable at night when hunting aquatic invertebrates. This solitary species burrows into soft substrates, a behavior that facilitates not only its prey capture but also works as a mode of evasion from predators. Mating activities of the species exhibit complex, ritualized movements.
