Alytes maurus (common name: Moroccan midwife toad, French: crapaud accoucheur) is a species of frog in the Alytidae family (formerly Discoglossidae). It is endemic to Morocco. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, rivers, freshwater marshes, freshwater springs, rocky areas, and rural gardens.

Moroccan midwife toad primarily ingests small invertebrates. The adult's diet consists largely of terrestrial arthropods such as spiders and insects, while the tadpoles consume algae and detritus.
Appearance
Moroccan midwife toad is a small, stout toad known for its rough, warty skin. Its physical appearance exhibits a rustic, earthen brown coloration that blends effectively into its natural habitats. One prominent feature is its large, tympanic membrane or 'ear' which is black and occupies a significant part of its head. Throat shades may slightly differ, being darker in males. No notable features like horns, wings, or tails are present.
Behavior
Moroccan midwife toad is predominantly nocturnal, emerging at dusk to forage for food, primarily insects. This species is territorial with males vocalizing to define their territory and females and young residing within specific areas. Moroccan midwife toad displays unique reproductive behavior as the male carries fertilized eggs on its back until they hatch.
