Diet
American alligator exhibits a carnivorous diet, primarily feeding on crustaceans, fish, and small mammals. Its feeding habits change with size, with younger ones focusing on insects and amphibians, while adults consume larger prey, including turtles and deer.
Appearance
American alligator is a large, heavily-built reptile with tough, scaly skin, primarily greenish-grey in color. Adult males can reach lengths of up to 15 feet. It has a long, flat snout, distinguishing it from crocodiles, and a powerful tail used for propulsion and defense. Its eyes and nostrils are situated on the top of the head, enabling it to lie low in the water, almost entirely submerged. There's minimal size difference between males and females.
Behavior
American alligator are predominantly solitary, nocturnal predators, exhibiting territorial behavior primarily through vocal displays and physical combat. Noted for their ambush hunting tactics, they show a patiently lurking behavior exploiting their natural camouflage. Courtship displays among males and females involve touching, rubbing and vocal behavior, often initiating from male to female.
