Description

The Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea), from the islands of the Aldabra Atoll in the Seychelles, is one of the largest tortoises in the world. Historically, giant tortoises were on many of the western Indian Ocean islands, as well as Madagascar, and the fossil record indicates giant tortoises once occurred on every continent and many islands with the exception of Australia and Antarctica. Diet

Aldabra giant tortoise, also known as the Aldabra giant tortoise, primarily feeds on vegetation, with a particular preference for grasses, leaves, and woody plant stems. Its diet includes fruits, fungi and carrion only occasionally, thereby displaying an inclination towards herbivorous habits.

Appearance

Aldabra giant tortoise is a giant tortoise with a large, highly domed carapace that can reach 122 cm in length. Its skin and shell are a greyish-brown color. Males are typically larger and have a longer tail than females. The skin on the legs, head, and front of the neck is thick and wrinkled, giving aldabra giant tortoise an aged appearance.

Behavior

Aldabra giant tortoise leads a largely solitary life in warm climates. Its behavior is characterized by basking, foraging for plant matter, and slow, ponderous movement. Distinctively, this species undertakes grueling migrations to nesting sites. Notably territorial, they may actively defend areas with abundant food sources. Adapted perfectly to its island environment, aldabra giant tortoise has a primarily herbivorous diet for survival.
