Description
Florida cottonmouth is a seminal figure in the aquatic ecosystem, deploying a unique ambush hunting strategy, where it remains submerged with only its eyes and nostrils above water, patiently awaiting unsuspecting prey. Its other notable behavior is the utilization of heat-sensing pits located on its head, using these to locate warm-blooded predators or prey, even in complete darkness.

Diet
Florida cottonmouth is a carnivorous species, primarily feeding on fish. Favored prey includes catfish and eels, but its diet can expand to water snakes and small animals when fish aren't abundant.
Appearance
Florida cottonmouth is a robust, medium to large-sized semiaquatic snake with keeled scales and a distinct pit between the eye and nostril. It predominantly exhibits a dark, often black body, with lighter crossbands. The tail is typically dark, nearly black. Juveniles display brighter coloration, with more discernible crossbands. It possesses strongly elliptical pupils and a broad, triangular head. No notable sexual dimorphism exists in this species.
Behavior
Florida cottonmouth is a solitary, nocturnal predator, exhibiting a sit-and-wait hunting technique and primarily feeding on fish and amphibians. Its unique behavior includes dropping the lower part of its body into water to attract prey. Not notably territorial, the species displays seasonal movement from water bodies to higher grounds during colder months.
