Lifespan
10-15 years
Diet
Cantil is a carnivorous species, primarily feeding on small mammals, birds, lizards, and amphibians. Exceptionally, it also consumes other snakes, favoring the hunt in the twilight and night hours.
Appearance
Cantil is a moderately sized venomous snake with a robust, elongated body and keeled scales. Their primary coloration is a variety of earth tones, predominantly brown or green, with darker banding or blotches. Young are more brightly colored than adults, with distinct patterns. Males are slightly larger and girthier than females, generally making them easy to distinguish.
Behavior
Cantil exhibits a primarily nocturnal and solitary lifestyle, engaging in active hunting for small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Renowned for its unique, two-stage strike, it often utilizes a warning 'dry bite' before delivering venom. Adapted to humid tropical climates, cantil does not exhibit migratory patterns. Moreover, it uses chemical signals for territory marking and mate-seeking during the breeding season.
