Description
Agama impalearis, Bibron's agama, is a species of lizard from the family Agamidae from north western Africa.
General Info
Lifespan
8-10 years
Diet
Bibron's agama's diet is primarily herbivorous, favoring nutritious leaves and shoots from local vegetation. However, they supplement their diet with insects, particularly in the larval stages, confirming an omnivorous tendency.
Appearance
Bibron's agama is a relatively small lizard, typically ranging between 9 and 15 inches in length. It sports a slim, elongated body with scales that are predominantly blue or turquoise, often with yellow or greenish flanks. Males possess a dorsal crest of elongated scales, and their coloration intensifies during mating season. Both males and females feature long, thin tails. Juvenile bibron's agamas are less colorful, usually with a pale brown shade.
Behavior
Bibron's agama typically exhibits a solitary lifestyle, often engaging in sun-basking. Males are very territorial, and territorial disputes involving head bobbing and stylized movements are common. Unique to its survival is its ability to change skin color, effectively using camouflage to avoid potential threats.
