Diet
The diet of red-eyed treefrog predominantly comprises small invertebrates, particularly insects. Their feeding habits involve active predation, hunting down their prey during the night. Preference is often given to soft-bodied arthropods like caterpillars and spiders.
Appearance
The red-eyed treefrog is a medium-sized frog with smooth skin. It is most notable for its vibrant coloration, sporting a bright green body with blue or purple markings. Its eyes are large and protruding, remarkably hued in red with vertically narrowed pupils. It exhibits slight sexual dimorphism, males being slightly smaller than females. Notably, its hind legs are longer and bulkier, facilitating its arboreal lifestyle.
Behavior
Red-eyed treefrog exhibits nocturnal habits, remaining inactive during the day in the branches while its bright green color offers excellent camouflage. Its red eyes are adaptive for its night activities, which primarily consist of foraging, mainly for insects. Typically solitary, males fiercely vocalize to defend territory and attract females. Mating season sees a drastic behavioral shift, with assemblages in communal breeding ponds.
