Description

Adelphobates galactonotus (splash-backed poison frog or splashback poison frog) is a species of poison dart frog. It is endemic to the rainforest of the southern Amazon Basin in Brazil. Its natural habitats are tropical moist lowland forests. The eggs are laid on the ground, but the tadpoles are carried to temporary pools. Though it remains widespread and locally common, it is threatened by habitat loss and has already disappeared from some localities due to deforestat

Splashback poison frog's dietary preferences predominantly revolve around small invertebrates. These dart frogs have a particular appetite for ants, termites, and beetles, with their diet strictly consisting of these insects in the wild, underscoring their insectivorous nature.

Appearance

Splashback poison frog is a small, vibrant dart frog with a silky-smooth, glossy skin. Its striking primary color is bright red, blue, or green, punctuated by black spots. Notably, this species has a robust shape and relatively short limbs, yet shows a striking agility. There are no significant variations in appearance between different ages, genders, or subspecies.

Behavior

Splashback poison frog exhibits predominantly nocturnal habits, performing key activities including foraging and mating under the cover of darkness. Largely solitary, this species uses complex calls to communicate during the mating season. With exceptional territorial instincts, splashback poison frog utilizes poison secretion to warn off intruders and protect itself from predators. This species shows remarkable adaptability to its humid forest microhabitat, preferring low vegetation for nesting.
