Diet

Western pond turtle's diet primarily consists of aquatic vegetation with a favor towards filamentous algae. They also consume small invertebrates, pilings, vascular plants, and tidbits of dead animals when available.

Appearance

Western pond turtle is a small to medium-sized turtle, exhibiting a domed, smooth carapace with unique marbled patterns. The color varies from dark brown to olive, often with specks of yellow or red. Underparts are a vibrant yellow to cream. Males have a slight concavity in their plastrons, and mature females are typically larger with a higher dome. The tail is short to medium, tapering towards the end.

Behavior

Western pond turtle adopts a solitary lifestyle, being highly territorial within its riverine habitat. It is a diurnal species, featuring a bimodal activity pattern centered around foraging and basking. It utilizes the strategy of gigantothermy to maintain optimal body temperatures. Notable for its sedentary habits, it frequently prefers locations near the water body for easy access to both aquatic prey and terrestrial retreats.
